The 20th and 21st of June 2011 will see The University of Bari and the Puglia Academy of Science host the 2nd Italian Congress of Scientific Gemmology - CIGES2011 on the theme of:

"THE DIAMOND: MINERAL, MATERIAL AND GEMSTONE"

The congress is aimed at researchers, with a particular focus on young researchers, as well as those with a solid professional background in the field of commercial gemstone jewellery.

Objectives and themes to be explored

National and International experts will take an in-depth look at the following theme areas:

  • Innovative non-invasive analysis technology, aimed at the identification of synthetics, treatment and origin
  • Exploration of the most recent advances in synthesis methods and surface treatments
  • The national and international scientific and political situation and consequent effects in the commercial field
The aim of the congress is that of providing m ineralogists , material scientists and gemmologists with the opportunity to meet and to exchange ideas in order to favour professional collaboration from which the scientific, social and commercial communities may benefit.

Congress Organization

The Congress will be held, on June 20th, at the Athenaeum Building of the University of Bari and, on June 21st at the Department of Geo-mineralogy – Building of Earth Sciences – Bari University Campus.

The opening congress session will be held on June 20th in the Salone degli Affreschi lounge at the Athenaeum Building of the University of Bari, with a number of notable academic and civic guests, with an introduction from Dr. Gaetano Cavalieri, International President of The CIBJO - World Jewellery Confederation.

The congress offers General Presentations of 45 minutes with interventions, by invitation, of 20 minutes. For younger participants, a poster session will be run on arguments that may not necessarily relate directly to the diamond.

A round table discussion, to take place in the Auditorium of the Puglia Savings Bank (Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Puglia), will bring the congress to a close with notable guest speakers drawn from academic, gemmological, commercial and political fields.
